CASTRO THEATRE RENOVATION

The historic Castro Theatre located on Castro Street in San Francisco was constructed in 1922 and includes two stories and a partial basement with 24,488 gross square feet of floor area. The main auditorium includes seating for 1,442 people on the main floor and balcony.

The project included MEP and Technology upgrades and modifications necessary to renovate the theater into a live music performance venue with capacity for 1,400 people including new tiered standing areas within the main theater with three bars. The balcony will remain as a seated area with upgrades to the upper lobby. The stage will be converted to a live performance stage with rigging and production systems.

MEYERS+ provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection, and technology services for the project.

ENGINEERING FEATURES

The new HVAC units sit on the roof, but the supply ducts run down the outside of the building and re-enter beneath the floor, so as to not puncture the historic walls. The new power conduit similarly runs up the sides of the building to the roof. To support the additional weight, a new structural steel frame was added to the roof, connecting to the exterior walls and existing long-span trusses. It penetrates through the roof into the attic to support upgraded speakers and light rigging.
