Brent Avenell
Mechanical Designer
My story starts right here in the Bay Area, where I was born and raised. Growing up, my parents really emphasized their love for experiencing different cultures, places, and foods. This made a very curious kid who loved to learn and explore. Whether it was K-nex or Legos, my imagination-fueled creations foreshadowed my desire to build things. This led to my first experience in the built environment on a high school trip to Mexico where I worked with and eventually led a team in building houses for families in need. While they were fairly basic structures, it was a rewarding experience in bringing a project from the ground up.
Fast forward a couple of embarrassing teenage years, which may or may not have included a yo-yo phase, and I found myself in the Midwest pursuing my mechanical engineering degree at Purdue University. Even though the engineering curriculum gave me a solid foundation of hard skills, it was the soft skills that made college such a memorable experience. Whether it was watching thrilling basketball games, competing in club water polo tournaments, or participating in events with my fraternity, Theta Chi, college taught me the importance of building lasting connections and friendships on top of a busy workload. After college, I returned to California and joined MEYERS+ where I get to apply the knowledge and skills I have learned towards incredible projects in sustainable design while working in an amazing hands-on, collaborative environment.
Did you know?
I love spending time outdoors. Want to go to the beach or a lake? I will be getting in that water to swim or even for a quick cold-plunge. Mountains? I will carve fresh powder on a snowboard or (hopefully) dodge trees on a mountain bike. Forests? This Eagle Scout will enjoy a nice hike, camping trip, or backpacking adventure!
